Instructions for activating parental controls on iOS

Prerequisites:

  • Device: iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 12 or later
  • Apple ID: For you and your child (under 13)
  • Family sharing: Set up family sharing with your child as a family member

Step 1: Activate screen time

  1. Open the Settings app on your device.
  2. Tap on Screen time.
  3. Tap Activate screen time.
  4. Select „My [device]“ or „[Device] of my child“.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen to set a screen time code.

Step 2: Set restrictions

  1. In the screen time view, tap on Restrictions.
  2. Enter your screen time code.
  3. Activate restrictions.

Step 3: Configuring the restrictions

Age rating:

  • Select the age rating for apps, films, books and music under „Permitted content“.
  • You can also block certain websites and apps.

Purchases and in-app purchases:

  • Activate „Ask before buying“ to protect your child from unintentional purchases.
  • You can also completely deactivate in-app purchases.

Location services:

  • Choose whether your child can share their location with other apps:
  • You can also track your child’s location yourself at any time.

Web browser:

  • Activate „Restrict websites“ to block inappropriate websites.
  • You can also create an „Allowed website list“.

Siri:

  • Activate „Allow Siri changes“ to allow your child to use Siri.
  • You can also restrict certain Siri functions.

Data protection:

  • Choose what information your child can share with other apps.
  • You can also change the privacy settings for certain apps.

Additional options:

  • You can set „time-out“ limits for your child for the use of certain apps or categories of apps.
  • You can also activate „Sleep mode“ to reduce screen usage during your child’s bedtime.

Instructions for activating parental controls on Android

Prerequisites:

  • Device: Android smartphone or tablet with Android 5.0 or newer
  • Google Account: For you and your child (under 13)
  • Google Family Link: App installed on your device and your child’s device

Step 1: Set up Google Family Link

  1. Download the Google Family Link app to your device and your child’s device.
  2. Open the app on your device and create a Google account for your child if you have not already done so.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen to add your child to your family.
  4. Accept the terms of use and privacy policy.

Step 2: Configure parental controls

  1. Open the Google Family Link app on your device.
  2. Select your child’s profile.
  3. Tap on „Settings“.
  4. Here you will find various options for configuring the parental controls, e.g:

Apps & authorizations:

  • Permitted apps: Select which apps your child is allowed to use.
  • Location permissions: Manage which apps can see your child’s location.
  • In-app purchases: Restrict or deactivate in-app purchases.

Screen time:

  • Set daily screen time limits for apps and devices.
  • Manage your child’s bedtime by activating the „Sleep mode“.

Google Play:

  • Restrict access to content according to age rating.
  • Manage what content your child can buy or download.

Web & YouTube:

  • Activate the SafeSearch filter in Google Chrome.
  • Restrict access to YouTube videos according to age rating.

Location:

  • Track your child’s location in real time.
  • Set geofences to be notified when your child leaves or enters a certain area.
